Let me introduce you to the paras dictionary for Finnish learners!
Suomen kielen sanakirja muuttajille (2010) by Anne Saarikalle and Johanna Vilkuna is the BEST because it applies the innovative method of feeding learners comprehensible input. All the words are explained in plain Finnish. It enables learners with a some basic vocabulary to GUESS, which makes learning so much fun. Learning new words turns into a puzzle game, which can be enjoyed either alone or with some study buddies. The fun not only motivates learners to learn regularly but more importantly helps new information stick better as well.
Linh and I have been challenging each other in this game whenever we hang out since I found this book. Linh usually loses so he doesn't enjoy it as much as me lol. Yet he couldn't deny that through it he learned not only words but grammar. The simple explanatory and example sentences allow us to analyze with ease, noticing collocations (aka useful chunks) and most used forms of each word. Learning the infinitive or dictionary form isn't a good strategy in learning Finnish, as the words in real speech usually transform drastically like masters of disguise. No exaggeration.
